Salem Design’s “Design and Construction
Energy Smart” Package Home
Our homes include the key features of an Energy Star
Qualified home.
1. Effective insulation
2. High-performance windows
3. Tight construction and ducts
4. Efficient heating and cooling equipment
5. Efficient appliances and lighting.
Our Insulation & Radiant Barriers exceed the Energy Star
requirements. In addition to the R13 wall Batts, all
exterior walls are sealed with radiant barrier ˝ foam
board. This doubles the insulation value on the 8-10% of a
homes exterior (the studs, corners & Ts). Radiant Barrier
decking is also used. Air infiltration is controlled three
ways: all exterior seams on the radiant barrier board are
taped; windows are taped with asphalt tape and spray foam
is used around windows, plates & all plate penetrations,
all exterior doors are also foam filled. R50 Insulation is
blown in the attic (17”). Performance Framing Techniques
allows insulation to be packed into crevices that
otherwise would be only wood or air (Ts & corners).
Windows exceed Energy Star requirements Our homes use
vinyl windows with 5/8” glazing and low-E coating, the
vinyl frame acts as a thermal break in the windows. Plus
we use Double low E tint windows on all west elevation
windows.
Heating and Air System exceed Energy Star requirements. A
super efficient reverse cycle heat pump efficiently heats
and cools our homes. Our homes features include Super High
SEER Ratings of 16, engineered systems, with separate
zones. Super Duct R8+ is used & engineered to the proper
size. To reduce energy loss all joints and duct ends are
sealed with Mastic and Metal backed tape. Return air in
each room and adjustable levers on all grills.
Energy Star Rated appliances Dishwasher, microwave and
high efficiency 50 gallon storage water heaters.
The lighting package includes compact florescent bulbs
wherever possible throughout the home, and Ceiling Fans
help circulate air efficiently.
